Everyone Has A Book Inside Them

One of the questions I'm often asked is whether I can help someone write their story. There's no shortage of ideas out there. Everyone has a book inside them. But how does someone go about getting it out of their head and into book form?

The answer is simple: they write. Sure, they could hire someone to tell their story, but then it would be told from someone else's perspective.

Writing is hard work, mostly performed on top of the demands of full-time jobs and responsibilities of daily life. It requires commitment, perpetual learning, and, if you plan to show your story to the world, a tough skin. Writing lays your soul bare. It opens you up to critique, sometimes harsh. Still, the satisfaction of having completed a project is well worth every bit of negative feedback you might receive.

You need to ask yourself why you want to tell your story. What is it you want to achieve? If your goal is to simply share your book with friends and family, there are plenty of software options that can convert your manuscript into an e-book or printable PDF.

But if you want to sell copies and see your story on shelves, then you have more work ahead. Publishers have gatekeepers: overworked literary agents with stuffed inboxes and an ear tuned to the market. You get one sentence to hook them, and if it doesn't, it's gone. This is when many writers consider vanity presses or self-publishing. One takes your money; the other takes your time.

Regardless of how you get to Launch Day, remember that Amazon is a recommendation engine, not a marketing department. A cold launch with no pre-orders, no email list, and no external traffic tells Amazon the book doesn't matter, and when that happens, Amazon buries it.

If you’re standing at the edge of your story, wondering whether you’re capable, let me tell you plainly: you are. You don’t need me or anyone else to write your book. You need courage, consistency, and the grit to push through the hard parts. The path to publication isn’t easy, but it’s yours, and it's worth every step. Sit down. Open the document. Start the first sentence. The only person who can tell your story is you.
